Packaging a java application for mac osxReceives a steam via IP, as opposed to a direct play device. Here is the link to the blog with Plex's explanation for this decision. Plex gives an explanation for all of this on their blog site, the main point that people are complaining about is Plex is moving away from the HTPC (Home Theater PC) model to a model where every receiving device is a streaming device, i.e. Plex MEDIA PLAYER for Mac and Windows continues on version numbering 2.4.x up to whatever the last version is that is released in JAn 2020. Then a few years ago things started going wrong. It was a reasonable solution as far as I was concerned. I started using Plex when Apple removed Front Row (I still don't get Apple's decision on that, BTW, it was useful for me). Although the shows were recognized properly in XBMC, I really did not like that app. Also, streaming functions were always breaking. However, Plex uses some arcane method of storing and naming files that is not quite XBMC, so my shows were recognized as all kinds of strange things, but almost never what they were. I don't want to waste time programing a remote that I use at most once a week.On top of that, I had decided to keep some shows outside of iTunes. I just want to sit down and watch something. What I liked about Front Row and the earlier Plex was that I could sit down and scroll through the menu with my remote, but once this problem started up, sometimes the volume would go up or iTunes would start playing music or the remote simply wouldn't function. On the Plex forums, people recommended some Apple Remote app, the name of which I can't remember, but that just made things more complicated. Video Player How To Use ThanI do not want to open folders for these kind of movies and select a file - this does not make any sense. And if the usual advice is, that I should extract & convert the movies to mkv, then it is less than acceptable.2.) The idea of a library to store informations might be good (or necessary) and it might fit for many people, but it is complicating my life because I have already an organization / structure for my media. As Pixeltrance said: who needs to watch TV when you have this to read? Reaching for the Popcorn, too.But less stars for the features - even if it is free of charge:1.) As Mcjf said: DVDs (and EyeTV movies) are displayed as folder and not as one movie file. I am not serious about TV and Film and rarely have time to watch anything anyway, so to me it seems unreasonable for an app to ask me to invest more time working out how to use than I will ever spend using it.5 stars for the fight between Jazzyguy and OSX-FTW. I want it to work when I open it, like Front Row did and Plex used to. It was a cycle I grew tired of.In the end, what this comes down to is that I don't want to spend time messing about with an app for TV and film. There might be a setting to stop this… and may be I should rename my file names to get better hits…5.) The interface is very cool, but I have problems to read the important informations. I was impressed about movies I have never seen and do not have. But there might be someone else?4.) If the metadata is wrong, then my media titles are renamed. Do not get this wrong - I guess they are not saving these informations. There might be a setting to stop this, but I do not like the default idea to inform "the world" about all the media which I have. Front Row did allow it to select iTunes library media AND the movie folder, not just the library.3.) All file names are send over the internet to one server to get metadata. TV shows) and don't mind limited configuration options. What you get with the free version is quite enough for most people. Interface (with matching theme music to your fav. Just take a look at the second screenshot here: 1/3 of the screen is used for gimmicks and the description on the left side is very small.I'd recommend Plex if you like an easy setup, a nice graph. But why is there no local access control? I mean if I want to restrict people's access to my Plex Media Server it can only be done via PlexPass, meaning it needs an internet connection. Why can't you just implement a local username/passwort database so not everyone on the same network can access my Plex media server. If Firecore can do it, why can't Plex?- As I said, I totally understand that they want to charge you extra for some features. The usual advice you'll get is to extract & convert the movie to an mkv movie which Plex can read & stream. But if handling/streaming VIDEO_TS folders is so impossible, how come that a jailbroken ATV2 can access & stream VIDEO_TS folders and even ISO disk images?!? No conversion necessary!Obviously, this is a major limitation of Plex and not one of some protocol. Just take a look at what Firecore did for the Apple TV. )I really really hope you will reconsider supporting VIDEO_TS folders. I'm happy they brought back Bonjour support (which is needed to wake up your Plex server from sleep instead of waking it up yourself) but you took your sweet time. Thank you.And just so people know, even though I am a paying PlexPass user, I think that the Mac versions are slighty neglected compared to others. Media scanning, while improved, still leaves a lot to be desired. Some support apps, Preen, simply do not work. The help forums are terrible. Documentation absolutely stinks. 8 has been installed since 2008, 9 has been installed from the start of the betas but I have not "released" it to my family. In a nutshell, this is a geeks breakfast and getting more so.No overview exists to explain what it does, how its capable of being run and where to locate the files you need as they are scattered all over the web. Initially I was enthused enough to start wrestling with it. If you want simplicity, give up the metadata feature and go with a dedicated media box.I just spent the afternoon trying the latest version. Navigation is poor compared to 8, skins changed with the advent of 9.5 which meant yet another skin.If you want to complicate your life, Plex is a great step forward. Pre Snow Leopard versions do not exist (you cannot take an old Mac and make it an htpc).I've tried to hand 9 over to the family for years.
